I've been spending the time since your email trying to get an idea of what's happening on the ground there.
TLDR: It's a mess and it's not going to be ok in a couple of days. Meantime, some of us have other, associated reservations that need to be cancelled very soon to avoid a penalty. So we're going to make the hard choice: We've decided to bow out.
Here's what led me to my decision:
Beach Realty says the beach is washed away and there's no electricity. That should be enough to tell us that it's a loss cause. They're not going to get it "fixed" in two days.
Power outages are widespread, and it's not like they can call in extra crews easily since extra crews have already been dispatched to help Florida.
Here's the status of power outages just for two of the utility companies that service Garden City and the immediate area.
They are making slow progress on restoring power, but just because power gets restored doesn't mean the mess from trees has been cleaned up and traffic fully restored.
There's a great deal of damage that's not going to be fixed quickly:
The damage to the area is clearly rather extensive. It's not going to be a pleasant stay. Note that some of the damage took away things like piers.
from https://wpde.com/news/local/hurricane-ian-south-carolina-pawleys-island-pier-collapses-floats-into-atlantic =>
"The Pawleys Island Pier, Cherry Grove Pier, Apache Pier and Sea Cabin pier suffered partial collapses due to storm surges. The Myrtle Beach 2nd Avenue Pier also had some damage. Parts of Sea Cabin Pier in Cherry Grove were being swept away in the stormy surge."
Under the circumstances, the beachside and pier-side restaurants and food places are going to be in clean up mode. Again, not a vacation spot.
It's a shame this happened, but we also shouldn't try too hard to make it work when there's no beach, piers washed away, the town cleaning up from flooding, ....
Love,
-Steve
